5S is a set of tools & techniques of organizing and managing the workspace and one of the most important Lean Manufacturing Tools. It enable the business to be more organized, profitable and improve the efficiency by eliminating waste, improving flow and reducing process unreasonableness. The 5S systems revolutionizes the way an organization views itself and will enable people at all levels to make the connection between quality, efficiency and being organized. It is the first step for problem solving or waste elimination in lean manufacturing or service and brings in quick results. 5S places an emphasis on using visual techniques to make it obvious when tools, materials, equipment, and supplies are in the right place – every time. It is the name of a workplace organization method that uses a list of five Japanese words:

• Sort(SEIRI) – All unneeded tools, parts and supplies are removed from the area
• Set in Order(SEITON) – A place for everything and everything is in its place
• Shine(SEISO) – The area is cleaned as the work is performed
• Standardize(SEIKETSU) – Cleaning and identification methods are consistently applied
• Sustain(SHITSUKE) – 5S is a habit and is continually improved
