1. All processes have variability and that uncontrolled variability is the enemy that needs to be fought hard;
2. All variability has causes;
3. Typically only a few causes are significant;
4. To the degree that those causes can be understood - they can be controlled;
5. Designs must be robust to the effects of the remaining process variation; and,
6. This is true for products, processes, services, information transfer, and everything that matters.
